Very Important Message from Gunter

Category : EUCMH Mails Center

Hello from Belgium.
As you will see, there is one category with American Infantry, Armored, Airborne and Cavalry Units/Division in the top of the left side bar and another one in the bottom. The top one will be the place for the archives, the photos and everything related to the unit while the bottom will only deals with the Order of Battle of the unit and the comments from visitors.
About the top category, you are all invited to comment the photos in French, English, Dutch and German (Caption) as well as add you own photos to the collection (if you have some). Please notice that the photos MUST have a size of minimum 1024 pixels.
I am only trying to get some order in the area and allow students and historians to find quickly what they are searching for.

You are all welcome to participate in this project and if you have Wartime photos from your father or grandfather, send them to me and I will see if I can ameliorate the quality (photoshop) of the generally small pictures to put them online. In every cases, please scan with a resolution of minimum 300 DPI (Dot per Inche). If you really don’t know how to do this then please send me the original and I will send them back to you (100%) as soon as they are scanned.

Thoughts on Col Townsend’s passing (Rose)

Category : EUCMH Mails Center

Photos : Marty Cavanagh : caption see comments at the bottom of the post.

It is with much sadness that I am writing to you. We are all struggling to deal with the loss of our beloved Col. Townsend. I want to share with you some of the events of Colonel’s last days. Last Sunday morning I met Isaac (Epps) at the hospital, and we spent the day at Col. Townsend’s bedside, in the Intensive Care Unit. We met late in the morning, and I stayed clear through until 8:00 pm, when the visiting hours are over and they ask you to leave.
Isaac had been there the day before, and had talked to Colonel and had made friends with the nurses and staff in the ICU.

MSG from Bob Calvert – US Army Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo

Category : EUCMH Mails Center

In 1914, we were at war. We called our Allies and the American Expeditionary Force came oversea to help liberate and eliminate the Germans. In 1940 it was going on again and what did we ? We again called the US Army for rescue. They didn’t even ask why or do we have to do this ? No way they came over here and did what have to be done to freed France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg and even Germany. Today, the US Army is calling us for help and we do not even need to risk to get a cold or something. There is no danger. They just ask us to help them. Don’t you think that some kind of payback from our part is deserved ?

Troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo Need YOUR Help !
For the past 10 days our troops have been sharing their mostly untold progress and positive stories over the internet as they call in on our program, from where they are serving in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

As Veterans of World War II it is an honor to be recognized as such. Yet in our Twilight Years it is often difficult to admit that we are nearing The End of The Road. After some 66 odd years our Memory may start to fade and the many details of our WAR TIME ACTIVITIES may be lost forever. I hate to admit this but my MEMORY is about like my hair SHORT. Each of us in our own special way can reflect back upon our World War II experiences and recall many events that we will carry to our graves. In general, many of those activities were very sad occasions that bring tears to our eyes as we relive those precious moments. Some, however, were hilarious and often bring tears of joy as we reminisce with our comrades of many years ago. If I may, I would like to relate a very serious incident that I will never forget.

Happy New Year – 2010 (Last Year)

Category : EUCMH Mails Center

I would like to send all my best wishes for 2010 to all of you, in every country all around our planet. 2009 was a very hard and even rough period for a lot of people all around the globe and 2010 will not be better as long as Banks, Traders and Speculators will invest money to buy virtually all the human being essential goods, with virtual money then sale these goods for virtual money, just to make real benefits on the costs of the humanity. These Banks, Traders and Speculators can be a part of this no risk supreme game because, if they broke, Governments will use the regular peoples’ real money to feed them back.
2010 will also be a bad year for the now definitely cut into three thirds planet; 1st third, the small people, workers, jobless; the 2nd third, the poor countries that will see children starving as usual since 100 and 100 of years; the 3rd third, the one that just want to destroy the other two thirds.
Nothing is working right on the planet and do not believe that it will be a little better in 2010. I just see black clouds in my dreams and hopes.

In The Footsteps of the 82nd Airborne Division 2010

Category : Commemorations, EUCMH Mails Center, Footsteps 2010

In The Footsteps of the 82nd Airborne Division, February 20, 2010.
Start : At La Gleize at : 0900-H, Following the trails of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division US by the villages Brume, Rahier, Cheneux, La Vaux renard and back to La Gleize. This 23 km long march is dedicated in homage to the troopers of the famous 82nd Airborne Division and will follow an itinerary by the roads and trails taken by different 82nd Airborne’s units during the battle of the Bulge. This year, we will walk in the trails of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, crossing the village of Cheneux where this units fought a battle regarded by historians as the bloodiest battle of the Bulge. A memorial for the 504PIR is raised in Cheneux. However, starting from La Gleize, first we will follow the first lap of the escape route taken by the 800 SS men, survivors of “Peiper’s Kampfgruppe”, who were trapped in the village and who succeeded to flee by foot, being surrounded by US troops including the 504PIR of the 82nd Airborne Division.

2 – I have lived not far from Warton base all my life. I was born in Preston in April 1944, my father in law was a GI called Edwin Beamer, who was based at Warton, but spent time off duty with my family. I have recently started trying to trace Edwin, who will be in his 80’s now , if alive. I am finding the plethora of sources time consuming to wade thru’ because there are so many interesting links. I have found records of an Edwin Beamer from Lycoming Penn. but this man only joined the Air Force in 1945. I would love to hear from anyone who could help me streamline my search !!

What a strange anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. Even the weather seems to partying with us. I was just outside to check the temperature and we have 13° bellow zero (centigrades). This makes 8.6° Fahrenheit but we are happy. There is no wind and no cloud. Millions of stars are trying to bring some light to the earth but it doesn’t work.
Hey I was just outside to – like some are used to say – walk the dog. Being a polite man I will say that I was outside to walk the dog without the dog. It doesn’t toke more than 2 minutes or so then I ran back inside and sat in the front of the wood fire watching these oaks pieces melting away in the flames.

Help make Remembrance Day a National Holiday : Phillip Anderson
I recently wrote to the editor of the Toronto Sun outlining this cause and suggesting that perhaps Victoria Day should be changed to Vetrans Day Canada. A day where we as a natiion could pay homage to those who gave it all as well as those still with us. The reasoning behind this suggestion was to not only achieve our goal but to do it in such a way that the concerns of employers could be met at no additional cost to them. What I am asking is this. Could each of you please email the sun and quite simply write in the subject line. Lets set aside one full day for our vets and their families.
The Email to machinegun is here. If your serious as I am please do this. Lets take 1 minute of our time and make some waves and get the attention of the Media. Do you think 233.000 emails will do it ? Thankyou so much and again Happy Holidays !!

Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for the pictures of Longchamps. You thought it was about as cold as it was Christmas 1944. You might be wrong. In my memories it was much colder 65 years ago. I lived and still live in the Southern part of the Netherlands. South-Limburg what in my opinion can be called the Promised Land. In winter in the Ardennes the temperature is some degrees lower than in South-Limburg and also there is more snow in the Ardennes.
How do I remember Christmas 1944 as I was a young boy of 9+?
In our house Scottish soldiers of a High Land Division (nicknamed the Black Watch) were embedded. They fought Rommel in Africa. A Christmas tree was not common in our hamlet. We had a Christmas stable. The images and the skeleton were stored on the ceiling. A couple of days before Christmas they were taken down and the “creating” of the stable could begin.

Request for Identification (Paul Dodds) USA

Category : EUCMH Mails Center

Photo_-_frontbwc5Dear Gunter,
I have loaded the picture on the EUCMH webserver and your system is working pretty well. On the photo, you will see that it has been enhanced. You will see also that the man is wearing an U.N.T.S.O. medal ribbon for service in Palestine as an Observer (had to be in 1948) as there is a date on the back of January 4th 1949.
He is also wearing a M.P. sash. The picture came from my mothers possessions after she had passed away. Mother lived in Cardiff. The St. Mellons Intransit Depot would have been only about 2 miles or so away. So I am trying to find out what US Units were at St. Mellons.
The request if open for everyone who can help in this case. If you can get a listing of the Troops that passed trough the St Mellons Transit Depot pass the information online to help Paul.

American Fighting Spirit (USMC-2005)

Category : EUCMH Mails Center

Message from a Facebook friend O.B. Wright. It’s a little old news but hell its a good one to read anyway. Leading the fight is US Marine Gunnery Sgt Michael Burghardt, known as ‘Iron Mike’ or just ‘Gunny’. He is on his third tour in Iraq. He had become a legend in the bomb disposal world after winning the Bronze Star for disabling 64 IEDs and destroying 1.548 pieces of ordinance during his second tour. Then, on September 19, he got blown up. He had arrived at a chaotic scene after a bomb had killed four US Marines. He chose not to wear the bulky bomb protection suit. ‘You can’t react to any sniper fire and you get tunnel-vision,’ he explains.

Lt Overcomes Combat Wounds (2009)

One of 2nd Lt Peter Sprenger’s goals in life is to lead soldiers in the 75th Ranger Regiment. He eventually wants to command a battalion and even a brigade. His goals are not unusual for a young officer candidate who has already led men in combat, but Sprenger, 26, was not supposed to make it this far. On Nov 19 2009, when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant, he beat the odds – and the naysayers.

How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?’
