343. Infanteriedivison Brest 1944

343. Infanteriedivision
Brest, September 1944
Rudolf Kogard, Oberst i. G. a. D.

A. From the Installation of the Atlantic Wall to the Beginning of the Invasion
- 1. Occupation in General

In the world, there was talk of a strong German Atlantic Wall already at the time when same did not yet exist. It is true, the Atlantic Coast had constantly been occupied since the termination of the German-French war in 1940, but the fortifications were limited to merely a few important points. In Brittany, the occupation forces were constantly changed; units which were intact were – at the middle of 1941 – sent to the East and replaced by troops from there, which were in need of freshening up. Their chief aim was the restoration of their full fighting strength, because they expected to be committed again in the East. Therefore, aside from training and recreation, they were – as may be easily understood – not very much interested in the development of the Atlantic Wall, especially since the majority of the troops did not expect an Allied invasion before the Fall of 1942. Since, at that time, the German High Command had given up hope for a quick termination of the Russian Campaign and hence, had to reckon with an Allied invasion in the West in due course, orders were issued in 1942 for the following essential changes in the defense system of the Atlantic Wall :

a. A permanent occupation of the Atlantic Coast by units which were especially organized for this purpose (so called “garrison divisions”)
b. a systematic improvement of the coast carried out by the garrisons
c. increased effectiveness of operations on the part of the garrisons, by means of allotting supplementary weapons, according to the importance of the respective sectors. These weapons were manned by permanently stationed fortress cadre troops, who had to remain in the same localities, even when the security divisions were changed.

These measures brought it about that the garrison troops gained a good knowledge of the surroundings and became convinced that each improvement of the fortifications would result in a betterment of their own combat conditions.

588th Field Artillery Bn 1943-1946

Category : 588th Field Arty Bn, 588th Fld Arty Bn, France (North), Germany

WW-2-Field-Artillery-01

This copy of the History of the 558th FA Battalion was reproduced by the Military Department, State of Colorado. It was copied from the original history as prepared by Lt Gilbert Hahn upon request of the Historical Section of the Artillery School. Their request was predicated on the basis that the original cadre came from a Colorado unit – the 983rd Field Artillery Battalion. It would be amiss if we failed to mention the great contribution by the State of Utah from whence came the bulk of the fine young men that filled the ranks. The States of Tennessee, Washington, Oregon and California each sent sizeable contingents; however, most States were represented by one or two.

100th-442nd RCT (Issei Nisei Kibei)(1)

Category : France (North)

The story of the 100th Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team is rooted in the history of the Japanese in Hawaii and America itself. As the second generation of Japanese born abroad, or the first Japanese generation born in Hawaii and America through the early 1910s and 1920s, the Nisei were American citizens and part of the larger greatest generation to be of the right age to face the conflict of World War II. This generation of Japanese born abroad best personifies the blending of American and Japanese cultures that laid the foundation for a resolute, cohesive, and dedicated unit that accomplished every assigned mission without fail. The importance of Japanese immigration to Hawaii and the United States lies not in the fact that it did occur, but rather in how it occurred and in its consequences. Like many that came to America, the Japanese came for economic reasons. Unlike many Europeans, however, the bulk of the Japanese came to the United States not to escape the old country and settle in the new world, but rather with the intent to return home rich after a short period of contract labor, in what actually equated to indentured servitude. Many did not return and before long had established a solid and unique Japanese American culture ‘one that often faced severe prejudice’.

732nd Railway Operating Battalion 1944-1945

Category : Battle of the Bulge, Belgium, France (North), Germany

From sunny California, Linda, the daughter of an American World War Two Engineer has sent this collection of nearly 100 World War Two Originals Pictures for the EUCMH Fundation. This is a great donation and I am working on these old photos with Photoshop to get the maximum of them out. As usual, when the job is done, the Originals Photos will become a official donation the the American Heritage at Carlisle Barrack. The pictures are about one ROB battaillon, the 732nd Railway Operating Battalion, one of these several Railtacks Enginners Battalion used during World War Two all over Europe. For our friends in France, as well as for Historians, you will see some never published before photos from Argentan, Thionville, Paris and Bad Kreuznach. This could be intresting for an illustration purpose in a website or in a book. Sure these units where soundless during the war but you should never forget that these units allowed the Armored, the Airborne or the Infantry to go ahead on the battlefields, as someone said once : even the best Infantry unit can’t go faster as the Engineers.
